Beyond the Medication: My Journey Supporting Clients on GLP-1s

Why I Created the GLP-1 Nutrition Starter Kit
Over my 25-plus years as a registered dietitian, I've witnessed countless changes in the world of nutrition and weight management. From low-fat diets and carb counting to intermittent fasting and the latest wellness trends, one thing has remained consistent: there is no one-size-fits-all approach to improving our health.
More recently, GLP-1 medications such as Ozempic, Wegovy, Mounjaro, and Zepbound have dramatically changed the conversation around weight management.
As I've worked with more individuals taking these medications, I've become increasingly interested in both their potential benefits and the nutritional challenges that can accompany them.
And one thing has become very clear to me: Taking a GLP-1 medication doesn't eliminate the need for good nutrition. In many ways, it makes nutrition even more important.
A New Chapter in Weight Management
For years, I've worked with individuals struggling to manage their weight, blood sugar, cholesterol, and other health concerns. I've also seen the frustration that can come from trying diet after diet, only to find that maintaining results is incredibly difficult.
GLP-1 medications have introduced a new tool for people who have struggled with weight management and certain metabolic health conditions.
For some, these medications have been life-changing. Reduced appetite, fewer food cravings, less food noise
, improved blood sugar control, and weight loss can make it easier to focus on health goals that previously felt out of reach.
But as a dietitian, I also recognize that a reduced appetite doesn't necessarily translate into a nutritionally balanced diet.
And that's where my work comes in.
What I've Learned Working With Clients Taking GLP-1 Medications
One of the biggest challenges with GLP-1 medications is that people often find themselves eating significantly less than they did before.
While this can contribute to weight loss, it can also create nutritional gaps.
Some of the common concerns I address in nutrition counseling include:
Not eating enough protein: When appetite decreases, protein intake often decreases as well. Adequate protein, along with resistance exercise, is important for preserving muscle during weight loss.
Skipping meals: Some individuals go most of the day without eating because they simply aren't hungry.
Digestive discomfort: Nausea, constipation, bloating, and feeling overly full can make eating challenging.
Inadequate hydration: Reduced food and fluid intake can contribute to dehydration and constipation.
Uncertainty about what to eat: Many people are prescribed these medications without receiving detailed guidance about how to meet their nutritional needs.
What I want people to understand is that eating less and nourishing your body are not necessarily the same thing.
Even when your appetite is low, your body still needs protein, vitamins, minerals, fiber, healthy fats, and adequate hydration to function at its best.
It's Not Just About the Number on the Scale
One of my biggest priorities when working with clients taking GLP-1 medications is helping them look beyond weight loss alone.
Yes, weight changes may be part of their health goals. But I also want to know:
Are you maintaining your strength and muscle mass?
Are you getting enough protein throughout the day?
Do you have the energy to exercise and enjoy your daily activities?
Are you learning eating habits that you can maintain over time?
Are you feeling better physically and mentally?
Weight loss can include the loss of both fat and lean tissue. My goal is to help clients support their muscle mass, meet their nutritional needs, and develop habits that promote long-term health.
I also believe it's important to maintain a healthy relationship with food throughout this process.
Food should continue to be something we enjoy, not something we fear or avoid.
Why I Created the GLP-1 Nutrition Starter Kit
As GLP-1 medications have become more widely used, I've recognized a growing need for practical, easy-to-understand nutrition guidance.
Many people know their medication dosage and injection schedule but aren't quite sure what or how much they should be eating.
How much protein do I need?
What should I eat when I'm not hungry?
How can I prevent constipation?
What are some easy meals that won't leave me feeling overly full?
How do I maintain my muscle while losing weight?
These are important questions, and they deserve more than generic diet advice.
That's why I'm excited to introduce my new GLP-1 Nutrition Starter Kit, launching in November!
I designed this program to help take the guesswork out of eating while taking GLP-1 medications.
Whether you're just beginning your medication journey or have been taking a GLP-1 for several months, my goal is to provide the tools and education needed to nourish your body with confidence.
Introducing the GLP-1 Nutrition Starter Kit
My new GLP-1 Nutrition Starter Kit brings together practical nutrition education, meal-planning tools, and strategies to help you build sustainable habits while taking these medications.

Balanced Meals and Portion Guidance
Discover simple ways to build nutritious meals that provide the nutrients your body needs, even when your appetite is reduced.
Managing Common Digestive Side Effects
Explore nutrition strategies that may help with nausea, constipation, and other common digestive concerns associated with GLP-1 medications.
Meal Planning Made Simple
Take the stress out of deciding what to eat with practical meal ideas, planning tools, and easy-to-follow nutrition guidance.
Hydration and Nutritional Adequacy
Understand how to stay hydrated and meet your nutritional needs when you're eating smaller portions.
Building Habits for Long-Term Success
Learn how to create realistic routines that support your health during treatment and prepare you for the future.
My goal is not to put you on another restrictive diet. It's to help you understand how to nourish your body while using a medication that changes your appetite and eating patterns.
A Tool, Not a Complete Solution
I believe GLP-1 medications can play an important role in managing obesity and certain metabolic health conditions.
But I also believe that medication works best as part of a comprehensive approach that includes individualized nutrition, physical activity, adequate sleep, and ongoing medical care.
These medications are tools, not substitutes for learning how to care for our bodies.
And whether someone continues medication long-term or eventually discontinues it with their prescribing provider, the nutrition knowledge and habits developed along the way can remain valuable.
Many clients leave their appointments feeling motivated and informed, but putting nutrition recommendations into practice at home can still be challenging.
What should I eat when I'm not hungry? How do I get enough protein throughout the day? What can I prepare for dinner that won't leave me feeling uncomfortably full?
These are some of the questions that inspired me to create a resource that clients can turn to between our appointments.
This November, I'm excited to introduce my new GLP-1 Nutrition Starter Kit, designed to complement and enhance the individualized nutrition counseling I provide at Ojai Nutrition Group.
Rather than offering another restrictive diet or one-size-fits-all meal plan, I wanted to create a practical collection of nutrition resources that clients could use in their everyday lives.
The Starter Kit provides education, meal-planning guidance, and tools to help clients apply what we discuss during our nutrition sessions.
What Makes This Program Different?
The GLP-1 Nutrition Starter Kit isn't intended to replace personalized nutrition counseling. It's designed to work alongside it.
During our appointments, we address your individual nutritional needs, medical history, lifestyle, food preferences, and personal health goals.
The Starter Kit builds on that foundation by providing additional resources to support you between visits.
Together, we'll focus on:
Meeting your protein needs to support muscle preservation during weight loss.
Creating balanced meals that provide adequate nutrition despite a reduced appetite.
Managing common digestive concerns, including nausea, constipation, and early fullness.
Developing practical meal-planning strategies that fit your schedule and lifestyle.
Supporting hydration, fiber intake, and overall nutritional adequacy.
Building sustainable habits that promote long-term health and well-being.
My goal is to make nutrition feel less overwhelming and more manageable.
More Than Weight Loss
After more than 25 years working as a registered dietitian, I know that meaningful health improvements aren't measured by the scale alone.
Maintaining muscle, improving energy, supporting metabolic health, and developing a positive relationship with food are equally important.
GLP-1 medications may help change appetite and eating behaviors, but learning how to nourish your body remains an essential part of the process.
I created this Starter Kit because I want my clients to feel supported not only during our appointments but also when they're grocery shopping, preparing meals, navigating side effects, or simply wondering what to eat for lunch.
Launching November 2026!
Beginning in November, the GLP-1 Nutrition Starter Kit will be available as an optional add-on to my individualized nutrition counseling services at Ojai Nutrition Group.
Whether you're just starting a GLP-1 medication or have been taking one for some time, this program is designed to provide additional education and practical tools to support your nutritional needs.
Because GLP-1 medications may change how much you want to eat, but they don't change how important good nutrition is.
